Sharper for longer · 6 techniques

Fitness

6 short technique videos, each with a challenge players can repeat to measure their progress.

By Terry Barton, founder of The Coaching Manual and 15 years in coach education · Updated October 2026

Not strictly technique, but we should be encouraging players to work on their fitness in their own time.

It helps them be sharper, run longer, recover quicker and get more out of sessions and games.

The techniques

Watch the technique, teach the coaching points, then set the challenge.

01

6 Yard Sprint

Most sprinting in a game is over short distances, like a late dash to get in front of a defender and score.

Coaching points

  • Start with your knees bent and your shoulders facing forwards
  • Push off your toes to accelerate away
  • Take short steps
  • Pump your arms and knees to increase your speed
02

18 Yard Sprint

Supporting a counter-attack or making a last-ditch recovery run might mean covering more ground at top speed. This simple exercise gives you loads of reps.

Coaching points

  • Keep your strides short and quick to accelerate at the start
  • Bend your elbows at 90 degrees and swing your arms forwards and backwards
  • Keep your head facing forwards
  • Take bigger strides to build speed and momentum
03

Endurance Run

Cardiovascular fitness helps players run further for longer and improves recovery during and after games.

Coaching points

  • Stay relaxed: breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth
  • Bend your knees and stay low when turning
  • Swing your arms, bent at 90 degrees, to keep your balance
  • Keep your knees high and drive down through the ground
04

Push Ups

Upper-body strength matters for every player and helps when protecting the ball. Push-ups are a timeless way to build it.

Coaching points

  • Hands under your shoulders, fingers facing forward
  • Fully extend your arms and keep your back straight
  • Lower your chest and nose towards the floor
  • Push yourself up until your arms are fully extended
05

Sit Ups

Another classic that needs no equipment and can be done at home. Core strength is essential for football players of any age.

Coaching points

  • Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor
  • Put your hands together behind your head
  • Tense your stomach and lift yourself up
  • Finish with your hands between your feet
06

Skipping

Minimal equipment and a great exercise to do at home. It helps with agility, balance, coordination and general fitness.

Coaching points

  • Jump and land on the balls of your feet
  • Bend your knees when you land
  • Stay light on your toes
  • Keep your head up
