Finishing

3 short technique videos, each with a challenge players can repeat to measure their progress.

The aim of the game is scoring goals, and there are some very specific ways to teach good habits and technique.

Whether they're defenders or attackers, having the ability to finish when the chance comes is vital.

The techniques

Watch the technique, teach the coaching points, then set the challenge.

01

Striking a Moving Ball

You only really strike a stationary ball at a restart, so teaching players to time their strikes on a moving ball is essential for their development.

Coaching points

  • Approach the ball slightly side on
  • Place your standing foot next to the ball and your head over it
  • Strike the ball with your laces and follow through with your striking leg
02

One Touch Finishing

Taking chances early is often the difference between scoring and giving defenders or the keeper time to block.

Coaching points

  • As the ball comes into the square, move forward towards it
  • Place your standing foot next to the ball
  • Shoot with the inside of your foot
  • Keep your head over the ball when shooting
03

Two Touch Finishing

If the ball is coming too quickly to finish first time, you may need a quick touch before you strike. The quality of that first touch is really important.

Coaching points

  • Take your first touch into space
  • Strike the middle of the ball with your laces
  • Keep your head over the ball
